Rapid Review – 10/20/20

Cinemartyr, Death of the First Person – A noise rock band that seems to take inspiration from most of the noise rock giants like Idles and Daughters. They have the repetition of a hardcore punk band and the desirable fast, rushing guitars. The incorporation of chanting and quiet vocals is extremely timely; however, the flow of the album is questionable. The album reminds me of Daughters's self-titled record; the tracks are very distinct and strong individually, but on the album, they lack flow. The Brain of Hideo Kojima is a phenomenally messy masterpiece. It is a little farfetched, but this album is like if Weatherday and Daughters made an album together. Cinemartyr impresses me to no end, drowning me in this experience of blaring noises, horrifying instrumental sections, and mystical guitars and fast or slow drones. I wish I had enough time to give it a full review; I would give this album above a 9. Hands down one of the best albums I have listened to this year.

Chinmay Goswami, Kho Jaayein – An Indian singer-songwriter that really sounds like a great blend of folk and jazz. It is a very upbeat single that exudes the feeling of fantasy as harmonicas, singing, and bells send the listener to another world. The guitar in the latter half of the song has that slight jazz touch that rounds out the song well. ~7

Funeral Lakes, Golden Season – An alternative rock duo that consists of a female and male. Their chemistry is seamless, making for a very enjoyable and sweet listen. The songwriting is very thoughtful, and the instrumental is so seamless for their vocals; the timing, atmosphere, and emotion are perfect. The versatility is surprising as Sam (female vocalist) ends the EP with a more intense lo-fi track as she yells, “Erase me! Berate me!” The cymbals, drums, and guitars are impeccably noisy here as well. ~8

Savesomeone, Love Is War – A rapper that utilizes a lot of autotune and replicates a lot of popular sounds in interesting ways. Nothing special; Juice WRLD-ish emo rap and singing. 5-6.
